A Day in the Life of a Mobile Developer

What does your role involve?

Hi, I am Yasin and I am currently working as a Software Engineer at Zenjob. I am working on our Android & iOS mobile applications that are used by our “talents” (the university students who use our app to find work). My role consists of improving our mobile applications and adapting them to the needs of the talents. We are working with UX/UI Designers, Product Managers, and the QA Team to improve our mobile applications. On the tech side, as a mobile team we are closely working on our applications in order to improve our code quality with common design patterns/architectural components etc.

What does a typical day as a Mobile Engineer look like?

Usually I wake up early. My day starts with reading new articles about mobile application development on Medium, then I check my calendar/tasks and plan what needs to be done during the day. Then I take the U-Bahn and come to Zenjob before our standup. After standup I make code reviews and start working on my tasks. Of course, during the day I have a lunch with team members, meetings etc.

What do you love about your role?

I like making things which are used by other people - that’s the reason why I started working on mobile programming. The fact that you can make apps which people use every day is amazing!

What is the most challenging and rewarding thing about your work?

Mobile application development is developing every day and you need to be up-to-date. One day you learn something, the next day you come across another new development in your field. Each thing that you learn gives you a new perspective.

How would you describe your team?

My team is young, energetic, friendly and “Hungry” (That is one of our core values at Zenjob). Each day at our company, you can see the glow in the team’s eyes to make something new and better. This makes you feel fantastic.

What do you think makes working at Zenjob special?

When you wake up in the morning, if you are saying with bliss that “Yes!! Today I will go to my company.” then that means that you are really happy working at that company. Virtually every day I feel like that, and I have never felt like this before. That is a special thing for me.

What advice would you give anyone who wants to become a Mobile Engineer?

Of course technical skills are very important to be an engineer. But at the end of the day, everyone who wants to be a Mobile Engineer will be a technical master with years of experience. My suggestion is that beside the technical skills, try to improve your capabilities in other areas that differentiate you from being “just” a developer like people skills, speaking/listening skills etc.

One fun fact about yourself

Whenever I go on a vacation my team play tricks on me like “There is a very important issue you need to look at urgently”. I always fall for it, so if you join our team be ready for this kind of thing ;)
